Food Service Guidelines (FSG)

Food Service Guidelines are baseline standards aimed at increasing accessibility of healthy, nutritious, and affordable food options. By implementing guidelines, a culture of wellness is established and healthy choices become easier. Food service guidelines can be established in worksites, hospitals, food pantries, community-based organizations, and more!

Steps for Creating Healthy Food Environment:

  1. Identify and engage stakeholders
  2. Assess site and develop action plan
  3. Develop and adopt policy
  4. Implement and communicate changes
  5. Monitor and evaluate

Examples of Food Service Guideline Updates:

  • Switch to whole grains
  • Offer fresh fruits and vegetables
  • Provide plant-based protein options
  • Reduce sodium in premade food
