(COLESVILLE, NY) Broome County Executive Jason Garnar and Parks, Recreation, and Youth Services Director Elizabeth Woidt announced today that Phase I of construction has been completed at a new disc golf course in Broome County.
The 18-hole course will be located at county-owned Nathaniel Cole Park in Colesville (1674 Colesville Rd, Harpursville NY). The park itself is an ideal location, as it is easily accessible for many residents of Broome County. The park’s topography allows for a large amount of green space and elevation changes; characteristics that will make the game both interesting and sufficiently challenging.
Disc golf is an affordable, easy to learn, activity that all can play. The rules are similar to traditional golf, although players throw a disc instead of hitting a golf ball. Only needing a disc makes the sport extremely affordable for all.
“It’s great to see the creation of additional healthy, family-oriented, activities at parks around Broome County. I encourage everyone to visit the many beautiful parks we have here in Broome County,” said Broome County Executive Jason Garnar.
Professional disc golf course designer Eric McCabe of Dynamic Discs designed the course. McCabe’s course design ensures the course does not impede on current activities at the park.
Phase I of the course was constructed by ZMK Construction. Phase I consists of 18 “short” tees and baskets. Phase II will consist of the remaining 18 “long” tees and baskets and will be completed as funding becomes available.
The Greater Binghamton Disc Golf Club (GBDGC) provided support and expertise to the project. Over the next few weeks they will be assisting the Broome County Parks Department in making sure the course is ready for play, which will include clearing the course. Park officials believe the course will increase disc golf tournaments in the area, regional tourism, and park revenue.
