(BROOME COUNTY, NY) On Friday, January 22, 2021 New York State announced effective February 1, 2021, participants in higher risk sports and recreation activities may partake in individual or distanced group training and organized no/low-contact group training and, further, may partake in other types of play, including competitions and tournaments, only as permitted by the respective local health authorities.
Broome County Executive Jason Garnar and the Broome County Public Health Director Rebecca Kaufman have been working diligently to come up with a plan to allow higher risk sports to move forward that puts first the safety of players, coaches and all involved.
On Wednesday County Executive Garnar announced Broome County would be allowing higher risk sports to resume and issuing guidance. After meeting with local school districts, regional county leaders and health departments the Broome County Health Department has finalized and issued the guidance.
Guidance includes:
- Having each school district or league submitting a plan to the Broome County Health Department that outlines precautions and meets guidelines
- Prohibition of spectators at this time
- Mask requirements
