Broome County Reminds Residents Bridge Closures on County Route 20 in Kirkwood Begin June 1

(TOWN OF KIRKWOOD, NY) – The Broome County Department of Public Works is reminding residents that the rehabilitation of three county-owned bridges along County Route 20 in the Town of Kirkwood will require full bridge closures beginning June 1, 2026.

The three bridges to be rehabilitated are:

  1. CR 20 over Susquehanna River/ Norfolk Southern Railroad (BIN 3349250)
  2. CR 20 over NYS&W Railroad (BIN 3349370)
  3. CR 20 over Main Street (Kirkwood) (BIN 3349360)

The bridges will be completely closed to traffic from June 1, 2026, through September 1, 2026, with traffic detouring around the project area during that time.

Single lane closures will continue intermittently before and after the full closure period until construction is completed in fall 2026.

Motorists should also be aware that there is a brief overlap between this project and an active New York State Department of Transportation bridge rehabilitation project on NY Route 7, which is part of the designated detour route.

Drivers should expect possible traffic delays during the first several weeks of the detour and are encouraged to plan for additional travel time.
