(BROOME COUNTY, NY) On Operation Safe Stop Day Broome County Executive Jason Garnar was joined by representatives from local school districts to provide an update regarding the County’s School Bus Stop-Arm Safety Program.
In 2019 the Broome County Legislature passed a local law to allow for the creation of a demonstration program for stop-arm cameras on school buses in Broome County. The program includes outfitting school buses in Broome County with stop-arm cameras to catch drivers illegally passing school buses. The cameras will be mounted on the stop sign that extends outward and whenever a bus is stopped, they will automatically record any vehicle that passes by illegally.
11 school districts are currently participating in the program. Camera installations on the buses are underway and signage is being implemented across the County.
Beginning May 24th, 2021, a warning period will begin for violators. On June 24th, 2021 fines will start being issued. Violators will face fines of $250 per violation, with higher fines for repeat offenders.
