What should I do if I find a dead or ill bird?

If you find a sick or dead wild bird, report it to the NYS Department of Conservation using this form. The information you report can help us understand how diseases are spreading in birds and they effect they may have on humans or other animals.

If you are a farmer or have backyard poultry flocks, you should monitor your birds for illness, unexplained deaths, and sudden drops in egg production. If you notice any of these signs, contact the NYS Department of Conservation Division of animal Industry right away by calling 518-457-3502 or emailing dai@agriculture.ny.gov.

Broome County Health Department does not test or dispose of dead/ill bird. If you need to remove a dead bird, wear disposable gloves, a mas, and eye protection. Avoid direct contact with the bird and any fluid from it by using a shovel to place the bird in the garbage bag, triple bag the bird, and place in an outdoor trash receptacle. Wash your hands with hot soapy water immediately after. Keep any domestic animals, pets, and children away from dead birds.
