After a fire destroyed the Taylor Garbage facility in Apalachin, Broome County is stepping in to assist in a time of need. Taylor Garbage will still be picking up your recycling, but they will be delivering it to the Broome County Landfill who will then have it transported to a material recycling facility until Taylor Garbage can rebuild their facility.
Leaders from Broome County, the Town of Union, the Village of Endicott and Taylor Garbage came together Wednesday to announce these changes to the recycling process.
In early January a fire rendered the Taylor Garbage facility in Apalachin inoperable. That facility handled the recycling process for Broome County, the Town of Union, the Village of Endicott, the Village of Johnson City and more. Taylor Garbage has been transporting the recycling to several material recovery facilities, at an increased cost due to transportation fees.
Over the past week the county has been working with Taylor Garbage to find a temporary solution to the problem. Broome County is taking these proactive steps to allow Taylor Garbage to concentrate on rebuilding their Apalachin recycling facility and ultimately save taxpayer money and preserve the local recycling process. The county will begin taking over the process starting Monday, February 3, 2020.
The Broome County Legislature will be meeting Thursday, January 30, 2020 to make amendments to local laws in order to make this process possible.
