  • BOAC Announces Second Round of Mini-Grant Funding for Opioid Overdose Prevention Programs

(BINGHAMTON, NY) The Broome Opioid Awareness Council (BOAC) announced today that it is releasing funds for another year of opioid overdose mini grants. $25,000 total in funding is available in 2019 for community agencies to conduct opioid overdose awareness activities.

The funds will be available to non-profit organizations, community agencies, municipalities and schools to develop, enhance or establish opioid awareness related activities in Broome County.

Last year funds were awarded to four (4) Broome County agencies that included: The Boys and Girls Club of Western Broome, Broome Tioga BOCES- Compass Academy High School, Southern Tier Aids Program (STAP) and Truth Pharm. Programs awarded included a hybrid model high school that interacts with both education and clinical substance use disorder treatment, prevention programming, and education and training in the community in high-risk locations.

“Fighting this public health epidemic takes a multi-faceted approach, and we are excited to offer our community partners the opportunity to again explore new ways of saving lives and reducing the stigma associated with substance use disorders,” stated Rebecca Kaufman, Director of Public Health.

“We saw some exciting projects last year and again are looking for proposals to tackle this complex public health subject area which impacts all sectors and people in our community”, added Marissa Lamphere, Opioid Overdose Prevention Coordinator.

The grant applications can be found at www.bidnetdirect.com/new-york/broome-county.

Successful applicants will be awarded a contract until 12.31.19, contingent upon successful program performance. Projects will be funded depending on the scope of the projects and may range in award amounts up to $25,000.

“Today we will partner for a better tomorrow to save more lives in Broome County,” added Jason Garnar, Broome County Executive. “These grassroots efforts will be another step in building the foundation of prevention, education, treatment and recovery.”

  • County Executive Launches “Ride and Read” Program

BC Transit Partners with Local Libraries to Provide Books on Buses

(CITY OF BINGHAMTON, NY) Broome County Executive Jason Garnar was joined today by Broome County Transit Commissioner Gregory Kilmer, and Director of Four County Library System Steven Bachman to announce the launch of “Ride and Read,” a new literacy program to put books on County buses.

“I am so excited to partner with our great libraries to bring books to Broome County buses,” said County Executive Garnar. “We are making books a convenient option for riders of all ages. I hope our transit customers take a book and find a new favorite every time they ride.”

“Ride and Read” encourages transit riders to take a book from the bus, read it on their journey or take it home, and return it to the bus when they’ve finished.

All the books have been generously donated by Broome County libraries.

“We are thrilled to partner with Broome County and with our member libraries to support literacy and the joy of reading by placing books on BC Transit buses,” said Steven Bachman, Director of Four County Library System. “By doing so, we hope to help foster and nurture a love of reading in Broome County.”

“Ride and Read” books can be found on bus routes in Broome County starting today.

  • Largest Clean Energy Project Ever in Broome County Goes Live

Broome County Solar Farm Live in Conklin

Estimated Savings over 20 Year Agreement: $2.6 Million

(TOWN OF CONKLIN, NY) Broome County Executive Jason Garnar announced today that the Broome County solar array is now generating solar electric power. The solar array is located at 399 Broome Corporate Parkway in Conklin.

The County Executive was joined by the Commissioner of Public Works Leslie Boulton for the unveiling. The solar array is located at 399 Corporate Parkway in Conklin. It is on a 22-1/2-acre piece of property owned by the county.

The solar array went online the end of June after being tested and approved by NYSEG. The County partnered with Tesla/SolarCity for the project. Tesla installed and will maintain the systems.

Broome County anticipates the savings in the first year of operation to be $140,000. Assuming that energy trends continue with historical observations, savings could total $2.6-million over 20 years. This was factored based on the versatile energy market and the rate credited by NYSEG.

The solar array is designed and built to offset power used by Broome County. The array is scheduled to produce enough energy in the first year to offset the energy equivalent to over 550 homes in the first year of production. This is based on information provided by the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

The total solar array size is approximately 5.2 Mega-watts. The solar array is estimated to produce approximately 6,169,000 kilowatt-hours the first year of production, split approximately half and half between the two arrays.

The energy is being applied to the County Office Building, Floyd L Maines Veterans Memorial Arena, Greater Binghamton Airport Terminal, and the Public Safety Facility.

County Executive Garnar stated this is the first of several major clean energy projects coming to Broome County.
