Mission Statement
To assure a fair and equitable marketplace, for both the buyer and the seller, by conducting annual inspections and testing of commercially used weighing and measuring devices. To enforce New York State Agriculture and Markets Law Article 16, the New York State Code of Rules and Regulations 1NYCRR - Parts 220 through 224, and apply the procedures set forth by the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

Program
Our efforts benefit both the buyer and the seller. The buyer is assured that they get what they pay for and the seller is assured of a marketplace based on fair competition. The goal of Broome County Weights & Measures is "Equity in the Marketplace".
At least once per year, Broome County Weights & Measures inspects and tests all commercially used weighing and measuring devices for both accuracy and proper operation. Certified weights and measuring devices are used during these procedures. Establishments using commercial weighing and measuring devices are charged a fee for these services.
Some examples of inspected and tested devices include:
- Computing scales at supermarkets, bakeries, delis, pharmacies and butcher shops.
- Fuel pumps at gas stations, convenience stores and truck stops.
- Heavy-duty vehicle scales at sand/gravel yards, recycling centers, scrap yards and the Broome County Landfill.
- Fuel oil trucks.
- Calibration of farm bulk milk tanks
Broome County Weights & Measures also participates in the New York State Petroleum Quality Program. This involves collecting around 240 gasoline and diesel fuel samples yearly, on a random basis, throughout the County. These samples are then sent to a special contract laboratory for chemical testing. These tests assure that the fuel meets all appropriate quality standards and that fuel dispensers are properly labeled.
Inspection Seals
The next time you are at the grocery store or gas station, take a minute to notice the date stamped blue (even years) or yellow (odd years) Broome County Weights & Measures Inspection Seal on the computing scale or fuel pump. This seal indicates that the device has been inspected, tested and is accurate. Most importantly, it guarantees that you are getting what you pay for.
