Broome County Assistant Public Defender Wins State Award

A Broome County Senior Assistant Public Defender has been recognized with one of the New York State Defenders Association’s highest awards. Jon Rothermel was recognized Tuesday, July 26th with the Kevin M. Andersen Award, which is presented to an “attorney who has been in practice less than 15 years who exemplifies the sense of justice, determination, and compassion (and) who tirelessly and zealously represent their clients each and every day and who is always ready, willing, and able to help their peers.”

“I am honored to receive this year’s Kevin M. Andersen Award,” Rothermel said. “While I was chosen for the award this year, we all deserve recognition for the hard work we do, for the compassion we show our clients, and the determination with which we do it. Public Defenders across this country work tirelessly to protect and defend the rights of their clients, to address their needs, and to make them feel heard.”

“Jon has gone above and beyond the call of duty on behalf of his clients during his time with the Broome County Public Defender’s Office both in and out of the courtroom.” said Michael Baker, Broome County Public Defender. “In addition to emerging as a leader in the local legal community, he has forged trusting relationships with his clients that have helped them get a fair shot in our judicial system. Jon is an example of what public defenders should strive for and we are extremely proud of his work.”

“I’d like to congratulate Jon on receiving this award and thank him for his tireless work on behalf of his clients,” said Broome County Executive Jason Garnar. “The Broome County Public Defender’s Office is fortunate to have such a dedicated team that includes Jon and so many others that work day in and day out to help everyone they serve.”

The Kevin M. Andersen Award was created by the Genesee County Public Defender’s Office to honor its namesake, a lifelong public defender who exemplified dedication to public defense and compassion for his clients. It is presented during the New York State Defenders Association annual meeting and conference.
