Jason T. Garnar was elected as Broome County’s 9th County Executive in November of 2016. He became the youngest County Executive in Broome County history after serving several terms on the Broome County Legislature. Throughout his first term as Executive, Jason has worked every day to make Broome County the best it can be for its residents, focusing on fixing county finances, workforce development and fighting the opioid epidemic.
Under his leadership, Garnar was the first County Executive in 14 years to propose a tax cut. Additionally, he took Broome off the New York State Comptroller’s significantly fiscally stressed list and continues to work to restore the county’s previously poor finances by restoring its fund balance from $250,000 when he took office to $6.5 million in two years.
Jason has worked to eliminate eyesores in Broome County and bring new life in their place with new businesses and housing projects. Since he took office, the unemployment rate in Broome County is the lowest it has been in 17 years with big economic development projects such as the DICK’s Sporting Goods Distribution Center in Conklin, the Binghamton University Pharmacy and Nursing Schools in Johnson City and most recently by helping bring hemp company Canopy Growth to Broome County. He has implemented a number of new cutting edge job programs and is building a new workforce development center in order to fill the over 3,000 open jobs in Broome County.
Jason worked across party lines with state and local leaders to bring life-saving drug treatment services to Broome County at the former Broome Developmental Center, a huge step in helping fight the opioid epidemic. That initiative along with other new programs has cut the fatal drug overdose rate in half.
Jason is committed to investing in public safety, and as a result Broome County went from having the highest crime index rate in 62 counties in 2015 to the lowest amount of index crimes on record in 2018.
Under Jason’s leadership, Broome County is developing a brand new Veterans facility in the Town of Binghamton to put several veterans’ services under one roof and provide the highest quality services for veterans in NY State.
Jason is the proud father of sons Nolan, Miles and Ben. He and his family attend New Life Ministries in Endicott and he enjoys long distance running and rooting for the New York Mets and Duke Blue Devils.
